Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) upcoming star impressed in his IPL (Indian Premier League) debut against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday, scoring a quickfire 32 off 15 deliveries. The young teenager from Mumbai made full use of his opportunity, showcasing his class and power on the day.
The 17-year-old came in as a replacement for CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. This not only led to him getting a chance to play in the tournament, but also to feature against one of the Yellow Army’s biggest rivals on his home ground. There were loud cheers as Mhatre began attacking the MI bowlers from ball one. Though he was eventually dismissed by Deepak Chahar, the crowd was thoroughly entertained by his brief cameo, which included some unbelievable shots.
Many fans had arrived specifically to watch Mhatre play, including some of his family members. Mhatre’s cousin, along with a group of boys, could be seen cheering him on in the stadium. While celebrating his shots, his little cousin was spotted in tears, capturing the emotions of witnessing a family member make an impact in a global tournament like the IPL.

Dhoni lauds Mhatre’s fearless intent and smart shot selection
CSK’s stand-in skipper also had a lot of great things to say about the young batter, appreciating the positive approach of Mhatre, saying that this is the approach he would like to witness from him, along with the perfect shot selection as well. He also mentioned that playing like that at the top order makes it easier for the players in the middle order.
“I think as a youngster, he batted really well. And you know, that’s the kind of approach that is needed where you play your shots, but at the same time, you pick the shots that are your strength. I feel right from the start, he just wanted to play his shots, We also haven’t seen him much, so it’s a good sign for us. Top of the order, if you can keep playing the shots, it becomes slightly easier for the middle and the lower order,” Dhoni said.
