Rising teen batting star turned heads during the Rajasthan Royals‘ (RR) clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 28. The 14-year-old registered a century off just 35 balls. He was eventually dismissed for a 38-ball 101, orchestrating an eight-wicket win for the inaugural champions as they chased down a 210-run target with 25 balls to spare.
Suryavanshi had already created history last year when he became the youngest player to be shortlisted for an IPL auction. He was only 13 years old at that time. The southpaw was roped in by the Royals at the mega auction for INR 1.10 crore. He had to wait for his IPL debut, getting his maiden cap in the Royals’ eighth match of the season, which was against Lucknow Super Giants. Suryavanshi hit two sixes from the first three balls he faced in the league. However, against Gujarat, he showed that he is ready for the big stage.
Here’s a look at all the records Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke during his epic century:
Fastest IPL century by an Indian
Suryavanshi got to his century off just 35 balls. He broke Yusuf Pathan’s record for the fastest century by an Indian cricketer in the IPL. The former India all-rounder reached the three-figure score off just 37 balls, interestingly, while also playing for the Royals against the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2010.
Second-fastest IPL century ever
Suryavanshi displaced Yusuf to become the second-fastest centurion in IPL history. He is only behind Chris Gayle, who scored a 30-ball century while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Pune Warriors India in IPL 2013.
Fastest century while chasing in IPL
Yusuf held the record for the fastest century while chasing in the IPL. His blistering ton off 37 balls helped the Royals come within a whisker of chasing down a 213-run target at the Brabourne Stadium. RR lost the match by four runs.
Fastest IPL century for RR (previous fastest by Yusuf)
Once again, the fastest century for RR in the IPL belonged to cricketer-turned-politician Yusuf Pathan until Suryavanshi’s onslaught changed things.
Joint-most sixes by an Indian in an IPL innings
Suryavanshi tied the record for the most number of sixes by an Indian batter in an IPL innings. Murali Vijay had belted 11 sixes in Chennai Super Kings’ clash against RR in IPL 2010. Suryavanshi also hit as many sixes during his 38-ball blitzkrieg.
Most sixes in an IPL innings for RR
Suryavanshi’s 11 maximums bettered Sanju Samson’s record for the most sixes in an IPL innings for RR. The current RR skipper hit 10 sixes during a game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2018.
