The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Maharashtra Cyber Crime Bureau to release the passport of YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, allowing him to travel abroad. The order from the court was issued after the Maharashtra and Assam governments told the bench that investigations in the FIRs filed against Allahbadia had been completed.
The issue was related to cases lodged previously on charges of cybercrime. Allahbadia, who runs a popular YouTube channel and podcast series, had approached the top court seeking return of his passport, which had been withheld during the investigation.
The Supreme Court, considering the conclusion of investigations and no longer a need for custodial procedures, granted Allahbadia permission to retrieve his passport to enable him to meet international obligations.
The top court also scheduled a fresh petition against stand-up comedian Samay Raina for next week.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh ordered a fresh petition, which the SMA Cure Foundation has moved against Raina — on his comments that allegedly ridiculed disabled people — to be heard on Monday, May 5.
The court action followed even as the Assam and Maharashtra governments briefed the bench that investigations against Allahbadia in the “India’s Got Latent” case were finalised, as per media reports. Subsequently, the court allowed relaxation in proceedings against him.
Moreover, the bench instructed Allahbadia’s lawyer, senior advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, that his plea to club several FIRs registered against the YouTuber in response to his comments made during Raina’s show would be taken into consideration at the next hearing.
