A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) requested a special session of Parliament in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir, Leaders of the Opposition (LoP) in both Houses of Parliament wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a special session.
Lok Sabha LoP wrote to PM Modi on Tuesday and said that the “Opposition believes that a special session of both Houses of Parliament should be convened, where the representatives of the people can show their unity and determination”.

In his letter, LoP Mallikarjun Kharge said the session “will be a powerful demonstration of our collective resolve and will to deal with the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam on innocent citizens on 22 April, 2025”.
“At this moment, when unity and solidarity is essential, Opposition believes that it is important to convene a special session of both houses of Parliament at the earliest… It is our fond hope that the session will be accordingly convened,” said Kharge.
Twenty-six people were killed and several others injured in the attack on tourists in Baisaran meadow. Joint forces have since been carrying out operations in the forests around Pahalgam to nab the terrorists.

Opposition parties RJD and CPI had on Monday asked the government to call a special Parliament session to discuss the attack and “its broader implications”. RJD Rajya Sabha member , in a letter, called on PM Modi to take elected representatives into confidence for a transparent dialogue so as to send a “powerful message” of resilience.
Besides the attack, the session should discuss its “broader implications for the security, well-being, and aspirations of the people of India,” Jha wrote. CPI Rajya Sabha member P Sandosh Kumar, meanwhile, wrote to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
The letters come days after PM Modi on Thursday promised retribution for the attack, saying: “India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers” and would “pursue them to the ends of the earth”.
In the all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister on Thursday, several Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Kharge, Trinamool Congress’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and the ’s Sanjay Singh, had questioned the government, saying that the attack pointed to “lapses” in security and intelligence.
Sources said that the Centre, during the meeting, admitted to the lapses. “If nothing had gone wrong, why would we be sitting here? There have been lapses somewhere that we have to find out and we want to fix them for the future,” a top leader from the government was quoted as saying in the meeting.
