In the clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) held their nerve till the very end to clinch their fourth win of , as they defended their total of 204/9 against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday. While the final score put KKR in a strong position, the game saw a fightback from the home team before Sunil Narine’s captaincy and bowling sealed the contest for the visitors.
KKR came out with clear intent after being put in to bat, smashing 79 runs in the powerplay, their second-best of the season. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine began brilliantly with a rapid 48-run stand off just 18 balls. Even after their dismissals, Ajinkya Rahane kept on attacking.
Axar Patel capitalised immediately after Narine’s dismissal by Vipraj Nigam. He removed Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer in quick succession, triggering a middle-overs collapse for KKR. Rinku Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi attempted a recovery, adding 61 runs. In the fag end of the innings, Andre Russell couldn’t give the required push as KKR managed just 45 runs in their last five overs, finishing at 204/9 on a batting-friendly pitch.
In reply, Delhi Capitals had a shaky start as Abishek Porel fell early, and Karun Nair followed soon after. Faf du Plessis held one end strongly and hammered a solid half-century, and found good support from Patel. The duo brought DC back into contention, targeting the KKR spinners, with Axar hitting three sixes off Narine.
But the game turned in the 14th over. Narine, leading in Rahane’s absence due to injury, brought himself back into the attack. He struck twice in an over, removing both Axar and Tristan Stubb, before returning next over to dismiss the well-set du Plessis. Despite some late hitting from Vipraj Nigam and taking the game till the final over, the defending champions successfully defended the target to register an 18-run win and break their two-match losing streak.
