Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) posted a solid total of 204/9 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 48 of the season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. With playoffs qualifications on the back of every team’s mind, each point counts and matters, and KKR came with the hope of staying alive in the race, and DC eyeing the top-two spot on the points table.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, DC captain Axar Patel believed the dew would work in their favour during the chase. But KKR’s start put Delhi’s bowlers on the back foot. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine hammered 48 runs for the first wicket, as KKR finished with 79 runs in the powerplay, making their second-best powerplay score this season. Gurbaz scored 26 off just 12 balls, while Narine contributed 27 off 16 with two sixes, including one off the very first ball he faced.
Meanwhile, DC managed to pull things back in the middle overs thanks to their spinners. Axar removed both Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer, who were looking to take the score over 250, while Vipraj Nigam and Kuldeep Yadav kept things tight. Nigam was impressive at the death, and picked up the wickets of Narine and Rinku Singh, with the latter earlier capitalising on a missed DRS chance to add a quickfire 36 off 25.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi played a stabilising role in the middle, scoring 44 from 32 balls, before falling to a slower delivery from Dushmantha Chameera in the 17th over. However, it was Andre Russell at the death that put the home team in a state of bother. However, the West Indian all-rounder couldn’t score big against DC’s spinners in the final overs. The visiting team finally ended at a score of 204/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
