Glenn Maxwell will not be part of the remainder of the Indian Premier League this year after being ruled out of the season due to an injury. The social media handles of Punjab Kings announced on Thursday, “Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the remainder of the season due to a finger injury.” This is a fresh setback for the Punjab Kings — who are chasing their first IPL title this season, under captain Shreyas Iyer — after they lost pacer Lockie Ferguson to a “serious injury ” earlier this month.
In the game against on Wednesday evening, the captain had revealed that Maxwell had a fractured finger, but had stopped short of saying that his tournament was over.
“It’s very unfortunate that he’s (Maxwell) got a fractured finger. To be honest, we haven’t decided about the replacements yet, but we are pretty strong in our team’s mindset and what we have outside of our playing XI. We’ve got a variety of players who can win you matches. So we’re going to stick to that as much as possible,” Iyer had said before leading the Punjab team to victory over the five-time champions , who became the first team to be eliminated from 2025.
Maxwell has had a middling tournament so far this year: scoring just 48 runs in his six innings. He has struggled so much that in his last four games, he’s managed just single-digit scores. He came with a lot of expectations at the franchise, which bought him for Rs 4.2 crore at the IPL mega auction before the start of this season.
, while speaking during the CSK vs game, had added that Maxwell had gone for scans on his hand. He added that the results on the Australian’s hand “weren’t great”.
“He didn’t think it was too bad, but it ended up getting pretty bad. He had scans and, yeah, the results weren’t great. So unfortunately for Maxi, I think it’s likely he’s out for the tournament,” Stoinis told the broadcaster before the match in Chennai.
Punjab have yet to name a replacement for Maxewell.
Talking about replacing Maxwell, Punjab head coach said: “We will be signing some replacements at some stage. We’ve got until our 12th game [to name replacements], so we have a couple of games to go yet. With the squad we’ve got, we’re trying to find players in our squad anyway, we’ve got most bases covered. So we’ve got Azmatullah [Omarzai], Aaron Hardie, who hasn’t played yet, Xavier Bartlett, who didn’t play today, it’s conditions based. But when we get to Dharamsala, he will come back into the reckoning up there, where the ball might swing and bounce a little bit more. So we’ve actually been a little bit patient. Maxi’s only been a couple of days, Lockie’s has been two or three weeks. And with the PSL happening at the same time, there’s not a lot of high-quality replacements out there, to be honest,” Ponting said.
