A Bangladeshi woman was arrested while trying to illegally cross the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura on Wednesday night.
The arrested woman, identified as Bokul Akhter, is a resident of Munshiganj in Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters after her arrest, Akhter said she was supposed to go to Kerala after entering India.
Several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya persons have been arrested for illegally entering the country through Tripura in recent months, especially since the fall of the -led Awami League government in Bangladesh last year.
A total of nine persons, including six Bangladeshi nationals and three Indian human traffickers, were arrested in three separate places in Tripura recently.
Vigil along the international border was tightened following assurances from the Centre that the nation’s borders were well protected and no illegal immigration would be allowed.
As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons, and two Nigerians were arrested from January 1, 2024, till February 28 this year.
A further breakdown of the data shows that 483 illegal foreigners were arrested from August 5, 2024, when the Hasina government fell in Bangladesh.
