In a on people allegedly making anti-national remarks on social media after the Pahalgam terror attack, the Tripura Police Monday arrested a man from the Gomati district.
The man, identified as Sameed Miah, a resident of Maharani, was arrested from the Telkachara area under the Melagarh police station in the Sepahijala district.
Souvik Dey, Additional Superintendent of Police, Gomati, said they recently received two complaints regarding social media posts, and the investigation into the second case is currently underway.
“Obviously, commenting against the nation is a major criminal offence. I will not comment on what the intention was. There are some misguided youths who, perhaps, without understanding the repercussions, have forwarded it. On what temperament they have done is a matter of investigation,” said Dey.
At least in the Northeast until Sunday for their alleged anti-national comments online over the Pahalgam terror attack. Among those arrested, 17 were from Assam, including All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam, while four were from Tripura and one from Meghalaya.
The four people arrested from Tripura included a retired teacher and a student leader, who are in judicial custody until April 30. The other two were released on bail.
Assam Chief Minister had threatened to invoke the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against those found directly or indirectly supporting Pakistan.
The Tripura Police issued a social media advisory against misleading comments online. They said, “It has come to our notice that certain individuals are circulating provocative and misleading messages on social media. Please be aware that forwarding, sharing, or creating such content is an offence under the law. Stringent legal action will be taken against those involved in such activity. We urge everyone not to pay attention to or forward any provocative and misleading message. We request all citizens to stay alert and report any such unlawful activity to the Police immediately.”
