With summer knocking at our doors, pests and insects have been multiplying and proliferating at an alarming rate. As the temperature rises, so does the number of spider sightings. Ensuring food safety and hygiene within the kitchen and around it is a crucial factor in maintaining one’s health and wellness. To learn more about what leads to the spike and what you can do about it, indianexpress.com reached out to a pest control expert.
In conversation with Deepak Sharma from the India Pest Control Company, we discovered that warmer weather indicates an increase in insects, which in turn means more food for spiders. “They are hunting flies, mosquitoes, and ants that show up in the summer. This is also the season when most spider species reproduce and hence move around finding mates,” explained Sharma, adding that the dry heat drives them indoors into cooler, darker spaces in the houses.
Sharma said that are nature’s pest control agents — they help eliminate diseases. One spider can eat thousands of pests in its lifetime. Some species, such as those of the wolf spider, carry their eggs on their backs, and unintentionally smashing them spreads more of them. Also, the majority of them, especially those available at our homes, are harmless and avoid contact.
“If you are seeing spiders, you should know that there are other pest infestations. Keep in mind they are not the source but a symptom of a larger problem that needs to be resolved,” he shared.
“Catch and release them in case you don’t want infestations. Fix windows gaps, door seals, and unused vents or natural repellents like peppermint oil or citrus sprays,” suggested Sharma. And if you do not wish to get your hands dirty, let the professionals handle it, he added.
