Surprising Breakthrough
Kesav’s breakthrough role came with the film Girls Will Be Girls. His casting process was an unexpected fairy tale. He didn’t know the process of sending photos to casting directors. He sent vacation photos taken by his mother and recorded a simple introduction video on his phone. Interestingly, this led to an in-person audition and a chemistry test with the other cast members, including Preeti Panigrahi and Kani Kusruti.
All-Women Set of Girls Will Be Girls
Kesav found himself as the only man on an all-women cast and crew. He quickly noted the calm atmosphere on the set, with less agitation and screaming than he had encountered on male dominated sets. The experience was especially smooth during intimate scenes, where he felt comfortable with the women involved.
The Brief for Girls Will Be Girls
Director Suchi Talati instructed Kesav not to view his character in black or white terms but as a human being, which helped him approach the role with depth and complexity.
Bollywood Inspirations
The newcomer looks up to Shah Rukh Khan, particularly for his characters and believes there’s much to learn from the iconic star. Other inspirations include the late Irrfan Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Ali Fazal, and Richa Chadha.
Dream Roles
Kesav admires characters like Rockstar’s Jordan, Tamasha’s Ved and Vicky Kaushal’s character in Masaan. While he doesn’t see himself in those roles, he finds them captivating and inspirational.
A Challenging Role in Saanvi
His role in Saanvi was challenging, where he portrayed an Indian IT worker with a secret gambling addiction who resorts to kidnapping a baby. Shot in Dallas, the story was based on real-life events, making it difficult for him to relate to his character for several days.
Learning from Hollywood
In Saanvi, Kesav worked with international actors from the US and learnt much about different acting methods, particularly the Stella Adler technique. His co-stars, a dog and a baby also added unique layers to his acting experience.
Upcoming Projects
Kesav is auditioning for roles across multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. He is eager to take on the role of a sportsman and continue exploring coming-of-age stories.
Embracing Every Opportunity
Whether in theatre or film, his journey has been one of embracing the unexpected and taking chances. With his passion for acting, a growing career, and an ever evolving skill set, Kesav’s story is just beginning and he’s excited for the future.
